INTRODUCTION

Recite ("we", "our", "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use the Recite iOS application ("App").

INFORMATION WE COLLECT

Account Information

• Apple ID authentication data: When you sign in with Apple, we receive a unique identifier and, optionally, your name and email address (which Apple may relay or hide at your choice).
• Email and password: If you sign up with email, we store your email address and a securely hashed password.

Study Data

• Subjects and materials: Names, icons, and colors of subjects you create. Text content, PDFs, and photos you upload as study materials.
• Concepts and questions: Concepts extracted from your materials and associated questions.
• Voice recordings: Your voice is processed on-device using Apple Speech Recognition. We do not store, transmit, or retain any audio recordings. Only the resulting text transcripts are saved.
• Evaluations and scores: Transcripts of your answers, scores, feedback, confidence ratings, and hesitation detection results.
• Knowledge states: Your learning progress, spaced repetition data, retention predictions, and review schedules.
• Study sessions: Session metadata including duration, scores, and completion status.
• Coach conversations: Messages exchanged with the AI study coach.
• Exam data: Exam names, dates, and simulation results.

Usage Data

• Streaks and milestones: Daily study streak counts and milestone achievements, stored locally on your device.
• Notification preferences: Your notification settings, stored locally on your device.
• Theme preferences: Your appearance settings (dark/light/system), stored locally on your device.

Subscription Information

• Subscription status: Whether you have a free or Pro account. Subscription purchases are processed entirely by Apple and RevenueCat. We do not collect or store payment information, credit card numbers, or billing details.

HOW WE USE YOUR INFORMATION

We use your information solely to:

• Provide and operate the App's learning features
• Generate AI-powered evaluations of your study responses
• Calculate spaced repetition schedules and retention predictions
• Provide personalized AI coaching based on your study progress
• Sync your study data across your devices
• Send local notifications about reviews and study reminders (with your permission)
• Display widgets and Live Activities showing your study progress
• Process subscription entitlements

THIRD-PARTY SERVICES

Supabase

We use Supabase (https://supabase.com) to store your account and study data. Supabase servers are hosted on AWS. Data is protected by row-level security policies ensuring you can only access your own data. See Supabase Privacy Policy: https://supabase.com/privacy

OpenAI

We use the OpenAI API (GPT-4.1-mini) to:
• Evaluate your voice responses against expected key points
• Power the AI study coach
• Score exam simulations
• Summarize coach conversations

Your study content (concept names, key points, transcripts, and conversation messages) is sent to OpenAI for processing. OpenAI API data is not used for model training. See OpenAI API Data Usage Policy: https://openai.com/policies/api-data-usage-policies

RevenueCat

We use RevenueCat (https://www.revenuecat.com) to manage subscriptions. RevenueCat receives an anonymous app user ID and subscription transaction data from Apple. See RevenueCat Privacy Policy: https://www.revenuecat.com/privacy

Apple Speech Recognition

Voice recognition is performed on-device using Apple’s Speech framework. Audio data is processed locally and is not sent to our servers or any third party.

DATA STORAGE AND SECURITY

• All study data is stored in Supabase with row-level security (RLS) policies, meaning only authenticated users can access their own data.
• Authentication is handled through Supabase Auth with Apple Sign-In or email/password.
• Passwords are hashed and never stored in plain text.
• Local data (streaks, preferences, failed write queue) is stored in UserDefaults on your device.
• Widget data is shared between the App and widgets via an App Group container on your device.

DATA RETENTION

• Your data is retained as long as you maintain an active account.
• You can delete all your data at any time from Settings > Delete All Data. This permanently removes all your subjects, materials, concepts, evaluations, sessions, and account information from our servers.
• Upon account deletion, data is removed from Supabase immediately. Local device data (UserDefaults, widget data) is cleared when you sign out.

DATA EXPORT

You can export your study data (subjects, concepts, and knowledge states) as a JSON file from Settings > Export Data at any time.

CHILDREN'S PRIVACY

Recite is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can delete it.

YOUR RIGHTS

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the right to:

• Access your personal data (available via the Export Data feature)
• Delete your personal data (available via Delete All Data in Settings)
• Correct your personal data
• Object to processing of your personal data
• Data portability (available via the Export Data feature)

CHANGES TO THIS POLICY

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes through the App or by updating the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
